Julie Foudy has been a soccer champion since the late eighties. She went to Stanford University and was a mid-fielder for the USA Championship team winning 2 FIFA World Cups (1991 and 1999) – oh, and two gold medals for USA. She was admitted into Stanford Medical school but didn’t attend. Her sports broadcasting career over the last several years has spanned many networks. She is now producing a movie for ESPN’s series Nine for IX about the team the 99’ers which was made famous by the unveiling of a Nike sports bra by Brandi Chastain after the win. Brandi and Mia Hamm had a lot of the fame but Julie held the team together and manages to be a proponent for women’s sports for girls. Both were my heroes in the 1991 game when I was still playing U16 league soccer. The documentary will air next week on August 20th on ESPNw. The series is interesting and worth a look. Foudy is a wife and mother of two young children, Isabele and Declan. She started a foundation with her husband inspiring young girls with sports and leadership, the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy. The Academy hosts camps in California, New Jersey and Illinois. She was an activist against child labor and in 1997 was the first woman to win the FIFA Fair Play Award against child labor used for manufacturing soccer balls.
Title IX is part of the 1972 Education Amendments claiming that “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance…” It is controversial on several levels Civil Rights, Male Athletics and even the 2012 London Olympics and in the last few years has been used in sexual harassment cases in many colleges as sexual assault denies someone from receiving an education. It’s also the name of a fierce clothing line that encourages a healthy lifestyle. TITLENINE.COM
